Movies update…

well..havn’t really update for awhile. Let’s do a movie update.  What have I seen lately..

lets start with..

1. Babel - Good movie, not great, but good.  It’s very pretty (great cinematography), great directing, and great acting (props to Brad Pitt).  The screenplay is plain and too simple.  It’s suppose to be intertwining story, but the ties were weak.

2. The Departed - OK.  I think this movie is ruined for me from the beginning because I LOVED the original.  I’ve seen the original probably 10 times.  Martin Scorcese’s version of The Departed is very different from the original Infernal Affair.  The plot progression is different, the way scene presented was different, and the tempo of the movie is different.  Here’re the bad - I think Jack Nicholson overacted.  The guy who was in the HK original is amazing in that role, so is the guy in Martin Sheen’s role.  Mark Walburgh’s character is completely useless and talentless in this movie.  It’s such a waste of time to watch him.  The good - Leo is on top of his game in this one!

3. The Prestige - Chris Nolan, I LOVE YOU.  You are an amazing character.  You are one of my favorites.  The Prestige is a great film.  It has Nolan’s signature out of sequence story telling, the much-used closed up shot and jump cuts.  I thought it was a great movie except the ending is too predictable.

4.  Marie Antonitte - Another Sophia Coppela movie.  Teaming with the virgin suicide cast, Kirsten Dunst.  I thought this was a pretty and entertaining film.   The music score was a bit overboard, but I thought it was fiting.  The ending should’ve carried to the decapitation of Marie, but that’s ok.

5. Stranger than fiction - OK.  I expected this movie to be good and it turns out to be GREAT.  I loved this film.  I love Maggie Gyllenhall, and i love emma thompson even more!  She is such a great actress.  This movie is funny and touching at the same time.  I like the opening sequence alot.  It’s kinda fight clubish (with the IKEA catalog part).  Will Farell..I hate you, but i like you in this movie.

7.  And here comes the best movie of the year for me - THE QUEEN.  This was a big surprise to me about how well done it was.  I’ve been rooting for Meryl Streep for best actress.  But I have to give it to Helen Mirren as the Queen Elizabeth II.  She is stunning.  I really expected this movie to be slow, dull, and a bordem.  But it’s exactly the opposite.  This movie was energetic, yet not over-reaching.  The actress/actors were great.  The story unfolding touches your heart because you’ve been through it and you know what happend.  One more thing - It actually makes the audience LIKES Queen Elizabeth.

the unmentionable movie - The Grudge 2 - yeah..not going to talk about that.

有時兩個人爭執,忽然聽到了一句話『我是為你好』;

The “Shokends” pt 5

Sunday - ACL day 3 - pt2

After Matisyahu, we decided to split up. Some of us are going to see Ben Harper, and some are going to see the flaming lips. Koala and I decided to hit the food stand and eat. The line were long and they were running out stuff. By the time we got our food, it was the end of Ben Harper. Koala had his first funnel cake. Good stuff. We just went ahead and wait for muse after dinner. Muse was probably the highlight of the fest for me. They were amazing. Matthew’s voice is amazing and piercing. When Muse started to getting known in UK (about 5 yrs ago), I really liked them. But I found them sounding abit too much like radiohead. Then they reinvented their sound and came to U.S. It had re-lit my heart for them. They put on a really good show. It’s always a good show when you get the crowd participating (jumping, moshing, crowd surfing) I think I pretty much lost my voice from all the screaming. Towards 8:15, Matthew announced that this is going to be their last song because Tom Petty’s management wanted them to cut short because Almighty Tom Petty wants no competitions. I was pretty irritated by that since I don’t really care for Tom Petty. But they did one more song and left the stage.

We, then, head over to the AT&T stage where Almighty Tom Petty will be on. He got on the stage as everyone walk towards the stage. It was pretty choatic. People who decided to sit down on the trail of the walkway is really stupid. They can easily became the victim of stempde. Tom Petty, to me, is pretty..unimpressive. I don’t like his songs at all. What’s funny is that four song in his set, it just started pouring and everyone decided to leave at the same time. Even nature’s against him on his set! I was happy.

After we left, we went to alex’ place to shower and picked Gary/Kelen up from Janet’s and head home. I was so tired that day, I almost fell asleep on the wheel. Of course, all three people were out cold while I am driving. Didn’t get home till 4 am that night. Overall….It is a fun weekend!!

Sunday - ACL Day 3 pt 1
Last night was a late night for us, so we decided to stay in this morning. We didn’t really get up till 11ish. It was raining and cloudy. Seems like a really good day. The first act I wanted to see is not on till 2:30, so we had all the time to waste. Had lunch at Jimmy John’s, great sandwiches. Then we head over to Zikler park. We didn’t get there untill 3:00, so I was able to catch the last part of KT Tunstall. Had a little scare with my camera because my camera was in my bag with the frozen water bottle. When I take the camera out, the lenses was fogging inside. I couldn’t take any pictures at all. It finally cleared up in about 15 mins. She is a pretty good performer, kinda bland, but good. It was funny that she threw the drumstick into the crowd after she drumed instead throwing up and let it fall into the crowd. I think she hit someone.
KT Tunstall

After KT, we just stayed there because everyone’s pretty exhausted by the 3rd day. We waited till Matisyahu to come on which was pretty entertaining. We were surrounded by potheads. I think it is reggae music is the anthem of potheads. I took a few pictures of people getting high. Matisyahu is not too bad. Everyone was swaying to his music.

Saturday - ACL Day 2 pt 2

The Shins is up next at the AT&T stage. The Shins, you know “the band that will change your live” per Garden State. Anyway, they are ok. His voice gets too whining and annoying sometimes. Overall, its ok. Kelen seems like he enjoyed it. After the Shins, Kelen was hungry, so he went to get food. I got upset with koala over some small things but got over it soon (as usual). I went to see Aimee Mann while they wait (they joined me later). She is REALLY GOOD LIVE performer! I loved her, loved her, loved her. Her voice was great, so was the guitars and piano. The only song I really know of her is the Magnolia song, or as she refered to the song that lost to the monkey song by Phil Collins at Oscar. It was so good live. One really interesting fact is that every stage, they would have sign language-er right infront of the stage for the hearing impaired person. It’s always this lady and this guy. They are so into what they are doing, they just do their sign language while they groove the music. It is so fun to watch them and it’s also a very considerate thing from the festival. Very cool, indeed.
Aimee and sign language

After Aimee Mann, we went to see the Raconteurs (Jack White with the full band). It was ok. I get annoyed by Jack White’s voice ever since the White Stripe. I think we left after they play Steady, as she goes. By now, it’s getting really dusty. I put on my bandana to cover my mouth (Gary put his on during The shins). We actually look pretty cool. HAHA.
Gary & I
After The Raconteurs, Janet suggested we go see South Austin Jug Band, then we found out Jug band doesnt use Jugs, nor have jugs (according to Shawn, Janet’s boyfriend, It is not jug band, its a sausage fest!). Anyway, I don’t think we even stayed for one song. Gary, Kelen, koala, and I went to see Iron & Wine. Iron & Wine is the band that re-did Such Great Height by the Postal Service, also featured on Garden State. They are not exactly what I expected. The guy looks like someone they picked out from the Drag - long hair, long beard, hobo look. Their music is very …christiany. So we just left and waited for Willie Nelson to come on. Now being such a country music lover (insert sarcasm), I am in love with Willie Nelson (insert more sarcasm). After 3 songs, koala and I just looked at each other and decided to jet. The line to the shuttle tonight is not nearly as bad. We got back to the apartment around 10:00. Took showers, ‘cuz we were really dusty and all and decided to hit the 6th. First we were looking for something to eat, and my wonderful friend who had lived in Austin for 4 yrs could NOT tell me where this resteruant is. Took us about a hour to finally get there and its around 12. The resturant is call Katz and its actually pretty good breakfast resturant. Then we head off to a club, stayed till around 2, then went back to the apartment.

The “Shokends” pt 2

Saturday, ACL Day 2 - Pt 1
Well, we were so tired last night and we just crashed (I actually did read some of koala’s finance case before crashing). Woke up around 9ish, and woke the sleepy koala up. Today is an early day for us ‘cuz THe Rocket Summer gets on at 12! Bryce is one major reason that I came to ACL this year. We found parking relatively easy today and virtually no line at the bus. But of course, why would anyone think I would have such a smooth day?! THE BUS DRIVER GOT LOST. SERIOUSLY lost! Finally, she found her way there and koala and I ran into Zilker Park to TRS. I think I missed about 2 songs but it’s all good. I get to hear Brat Pack which is a song that I just fell in love with. I already saw TRS earlier this year at Granada and he was REALLY GOOD i must say. Bryce is always very energeic, although it’s a pretty small crowd but he still put on a pretty good performance. Jumping around, making everyone jump around.
The rocket summer

After TRS, it was around lunch time. We got the food at Zilker park. I have to say the food is actually REALLY GOOD. I got this southwest chicken pot-pie thingy but hand held style. It is really really good. We were watching Murder by Death when we ate, they are OK. Then we just went forward to watch I Love You but I’ve Chosen Darkness. I was pretty impressed with them! Not only they have the coolest name, they are also good! Then we went to Ben Kweller and met up with Gary, Kelen, Janet & Gangs. Ben Kweller was delayed, then he came up on stage and said ” sorry, my nose wouldn’t stop bleeding.” He started singing, and his nose still won’t stop bleeding. So he got this towel all bloody. Then someone suggested USE TAMPON! AND HE DID! he just stuffed a tampon in his nose and kept singing. Of course it fell after one song. Now his guitar is all bloody. Then he went on doing a ballad on his keyboard, then his keyboard is all bloody. It was actually really gruesome and fun at the same time. He was then carried off by the medics. I have to give him props for getting on stage under his condition. Although he cut his set short to only 3 or 4 songs, he is one great artist.
Ben Kweller Ben Kweller

After Ben Kweller, we went to see Nada Surf. Really not impressed by them. Pretty boring set. Half way into the show, everyone left. I think they are just a band that everyone heard of their name, but not really know their music. So everyone shows up and they decided they didnt like it and left. Althought they kind of sucked, I still get to see some eye candies there. That’s always good.

The “Shokends” pt 1

Well, this is long overdue (acutally its only last weekend). Last weekend was the show-weekends - four straight day of concerts. Starting out on Thursday with Tools. Tools was great, it would’ve been better if I knew more songs of them. Seating kinda sucked, and I sold the better seating for a low price (who would’ve know they would have open stage instead of speaker on the side!!). I was pretty upset about that, but overall, it was a good concert. The lighting was amazing. They have lasers (wooo…). After the concert and dropping gary back home, I had to go to wal-mart to get ready for the long trip next day.

Friday - ACL DAY 1

Drove down to Austin around 10:00 with only 2 hours of sleep (blame the koala). The car was PACKED! Four people squeezing into my little Scion (with one guy that’s 6′4). The drive was pretty uneventful. We were listening to CD’s and talked some (not awhole lot cuz Kelen, Gary’s friend, and koala, my friend, are so quiet). Lets see what did we listen to - Red Jumpsuit appractus, Green Day live, Postal service, Death Cab (that’s all I can remember). Got to Austin around 2, went to Janet’s apt (Gary’s sis..where Gary and Kelen will be staying at). Then we went to pick up Alex and drove him back to his apt (where koala and I will be staying at). Alex’ apt is pretty cool. It’s 2 stories with living room downstair. We dropped our stuff off, grab something to eat at Jack, then off to Zilker Park. We were planning to start our day off by Gnarl’s Bartley (starts at 4:30). Well, didn’t go as well as we planned. The parking is horrible, first of all. The bus pick up (you have to ride shuttle to Zilker park). We tried to find parking for at least 30 mins and end up parking on Red River (which is about 5 or 6 blocks away). The line for the shuttle was LONG. It just snaked around the republic square, fortunately they were moving pretty fast. Well, we finally got to Zilker Park around 5:30 and caught the end of Gomez.

here is the map of Zilker Park
Map

There weren’t many act I really wanted to see on first day (completely opposite of koala). One thing I noticed this year was all the planted grass. From what I heard, they planted all the grass to hold down the dirt/sand at Zilker park because dust was a huge problem last year. It was so dusty, you can’t open your eyes or mouth. It’s like going through a sandstrom.

We call this year’s ACL the garden state ACL, many people off the Garden State soundtrack were there. First up -Theivery Corporation. They were pretty cool. They probably have the most people in one band (comparable to the polyphonic spree whatever their name is). They change singers on every song, and they have a belly dancer!! That was cool.
Thievery Corporation

next up, the big one of the night, John Mayer.
I never really liked John Mayer’s music or him as person. I have to say I am pretty impressed with his live performance. He put on a really good show. He did his new songs and his older songs. There were quiet a few people there probably around 80,000. That was the end of the night
John Mayer
After the show, the line to the shuttle was long and tiring. It’s quiet deciving too. We asked the worker how long is the line, and she said oh its not bad, its right up there with the tower. We thought, its really not bad. Well turns out, the line goes out and back in and out and in, just goes round and round and round. Took us about 45 mins to get on the bus and back to Downtown. We then went to eat at the famous Kirby Lane, which I still don’t understand why is it famous. The food is just not all that great (even when I am hungry!) We are off to our own places afterward. Alex’s roommate, Raymond, is so adorable. HAHA. Koala and I walked in the apartment, we see these 2 notes on sofa that says ..”Welcome Alex’s friends. Please make yourself at home……here is my number if you need anything….” Then we went upstair and heard the water running in the bathroom. We weren’t sure if there’s anyone in there so we knocked and knocked. NO ONE answered, but I was afraid that JJ’s in there. So I tried to peeked in under the door, the lights off. So we opend the door and another note fell. It reads “Don’t bother to turn off the water, it won’t”. Quiet funny. That was the end of day 1 @ ACL.

summer movie review

this is wut i said before the summer started about the movies I wanted to see.
10. Snakes on the Plane <--Pretty funny movie. Not scary at all, but didn't live up to the hype.
9. Over the hedg <-- eh..it's alright.
8. Cars <- Very funny. Surprisingly good
7. Nacho Libre <- Did not get to see it.
6. Just My Luck <- POS. Stay away!
5. Pirates of Carribean II <- Eh..no comment
4. Alpha Dog <- No release date yet!
3. X3 <- it's ok. nothing too impressive
2. Devils Wear Prada <- Probably one of my fav movie of the summer. It was well-done, well-act, and well-directed (at least the first part of the movie). Bow to Queen Streeps. She lived this movie.
1. The Da Vinci Code <- what a disaster. The story line did not captured the excitement and the suspense of the book, Audrey looks cute but completely useless!
Pulse (japanese remake) <- didn't get to see it
The Fountain (Darren Aronofsky) <- released in Nov.
Southland Tale (Richard Kelly) <- bombed at Venice, direct to dvd? hope not

the most surprising good movie of the summer - Little Miss Sunshine.
It was funny, touching, and very well directed. Steve Carelle is a natural in there, and Toni Collette is good as always. Props goes to lil Abby and Alan Arkins.

and what else did I see? lets see
Superman Return - blah movie. Kate Bosworth is not pretty nor good actress.
John Tucker Must Die - why did i see this movie? well, it was only for 50cents. Don't ask me how it is, 'cuz i don't remember much from it.

overall - this is pretty sad summer blockbusters...I'm getting more disappointed each year by the trashes they put out. sigh...but welcome the oscar (aka the good movie) season~

here are the movies i'M dying to see.

The Science of Sleep
Babel
Marie Antonitte
The Departed
Little Children
The Fountain
Stranger than fiction
The History Boys
Running with Scissors
Blood Diamonds
The Prestige
Fast Food Nation
